ANNUNCIATION TO THE SHEPHERDS, miniature on a leaf from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT BOOK OF HOURS ON VELLUM
[Rouen, 1470s]
170 x 112 mm (visible surface). Arch-topped miniature showing four shepherds and a shepherdess cradling a lamb, surrounded by sheep and a dog, an angel appearing at the tip of the arch holding a text banner in his outspread hands, within a floral border with a colourful grotesque in the floral border, small cityscape in the background, one of the shepherds playing the bagpipes (slight smudging). This leaf carries the opening of Terce in the Hours of the Virgin, and is offered together with another leaf from the same book of hours - all text leaves with 17 lines of gothic bookhand and panel borders to their outer margins - this with Psalm 24 from the Office of the Dead (112 x 98 mm, visible surface). Stylistically, it may be linked to the Master of the Geneva Latini, whose lively figures and clarity of design made him the dominant figure in the production of illuminated Books of Hours in Rouen during the latter half of the fifteenth century.
