Lot Essay

The border pattern found along this sampler is similar to others documented in Philadelphia examples of the Federal period. The combination of floral and geomentric shaped vines appears on a sampler wrought by Catherine Lapp of Philadelphia, dated 1796, illustrated in Betty Ring, Girlhood Embroidery, (New York, 1993), p. 366, and currently scheduled for sale at Christie's New York, Property From the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Nusrala, January 21, 2006, lot 653.
