Professor Dr. Helmut Börsch-Supan, having studied the original, confirmed the attribution to Schnorr in a letter dated 10 February 2005.
The drawing was made in preparation for one of the 240 woodcut illustrations for Die Bibel in Bildern, published in 1860. The composition shows the Jews, having returned from exile in Babylon to discover Jerusalem ruined, rebuilding the city walls at the approach of the army of their enemies led by Sanballat the Samaritan.
