Lot Essay

This impressive and elegant pattern is traditionally referred to as the 'Pepys' set. For a similar chess set see Gareth Williams, Master Pieces, Quintet Publishing 2000, page 104. Its likely the descendents of the diarist Samuel Pepys, acquired the set in India during the early 19th century, where similar sets were made in Vizagapatam for export.
