The porringer cylindrical and on a spreading foot with a twisted wire, the lower part of the body applied with cut-card decoration, with two scroll handles, the detachable cover with three scroll feet, engraved with an inscription, the spoon with a trefid terminal, marked near handle and inside cover, the spoon marked on the back; with a card printed with the initial of Prince Henry below a Royal Duke's coronet, inscribed in an unknown hand 'From Lord Gort Godfather'

Given to Prince William of Gloucester by his godfather John Prendergast, 6th Viscount Gort (1886-1946), Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Gibraltar, on the occasion of his christening.

Prince Henry had served on Viscount Gort's staff during the early years of the Second World War as part of the British Expeditionary Force in France. Gort had received the VC during the First World War. Known for his leadership skills he commanded the British forces in France up to Dunkirk, after which he was appointed Governor of Gibralter and later commander-in-chief in Palestine.
