Circular, the detachable cover applied with four cut-steel, gilt-metal and enamel badges of the Scot's Guard, further applied with a silver-gilt cypher below a coronet, the inside of the cover engraved with two cyphers and an inscription, the interior gilded, marked near rim and on cover, the base further engraved 'ORTNER & HOULE 3. ST. JAMES'S ST. W.', with a card from Bagshot Park, Surrey written in an unknown hand 'A silver Scots Guards biscuit-box. Presented to H.R.H. The Duke of Gloucester by Lady Patricia Ramsay'

The cypher on the cover and interior is that of Prince Arthur, (1850-1942), third son of Queen Victoria, who married Princess Louise Margaret Alexandra Victoria Agnes of Prussia (1860-1917), the third daughter of Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia in 1879.

The second cypher inside is that of Queen Victoria.

The inscription reads 'From your loving Mama. Xmas 1886.'

Given to Prince Arthur (1850-1942) by his mother Queen Victoria, Christmas 1886, perhaps in honour of his promotion to Commander in Chief of the Bombay army that year, and then by descent to his youngest daughter,
Princess Patricia of Connaught (1886-1974), who abdicated her Royal style in 1919 to become Lady Patricia Ramsay
