BARET, Michael. An Hipponomie or the Vineyard of Horsemanship. London: George Eld, 1618.
3 parts in one volume, 4° (182 x 136mm). Woodcut initials and head-pieces. (Some light browning and marking and very light dampstaining, a few foremargins trimmed touching text or sidenotes, small wormhole in last two quires, lacking bifolium 2D3.6.) Contemporary blind-ruled sheep (rubbed, a few small wormholes, spine cracked and chipped). Provenance: John Rolle, Baron Rolle (1750-1842, bookplate).
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF BARET'S UNCOMMON WORK. The three parts of the work consider both the theoretical and practical aspects of horsemanship (including breeding, riding, training, and diet), and the third part concentrates particularly on hunting. Baret discourses at length on breeding, the treatment of horses ('that a Horseman should not be fierce nor angry ... That he should be louing and gentle'), their diseases and cures, and dressage. This copy is from the library of Baron Rolle, the Pittite politician, critic of the Prince of Wales, opponent of Fox, and eponymous hero of the Rolliad (1785). A second, incomplete copy of the work is included in the lot. Only one copy of An Hipponomie is recorded at auction by ABPC since 1975. Huth p. 17; Mellon/Podeschi 20; STC 1412. (2)
