HOWITT, Samuel (?1765-1822). Orme's Collection of British Field Sports. London: Edward Orme, 1807-[1808].
Oblong 2° (458 x 572mm). Hand-coloured aquatint title by J. Godby and H. Merke after W.M. Craig. 20 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Godby, Vivares, Craig, Clark and Merke after Howitt with captions beneath in English and French, plate 2 with the letter 'x' added to 'Chevau' in manuscript, plate 2 with caption 'RACEING' and 9 with caption 'COURSING', neither with letterpress cancellans slip. Letterpress 'List of Plates' with hand-coloured aquatint vignette by J. Swain after Howitt and plate titles in English and French. (Occasional light spotting, some very light browning, one plate with unobtrusive small hole, another with clean, skilfully-repaired tear, title and plates 1-2 trimmed on margins.) Contemporary straight-grained maroon morocco over marbled boards, upper board with inset octagonal etched title-panel from original wrappers, spine gilt in compartments and titled in gilt (some rubbing and scuffing causing minor surface losses, skilfully rebacked retaining portion of original spine, corners with skilful repairs, title-panel trimmed with small loss), 20th-century cloth box (a little worn). Provenance: H.A. (bookplate on upper pastedown with crest and motto of the Askew, Ayscough or Ascough family).
'VERY RARE. THE FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF THE FINEST AND MOST IMPORTANT SPORTING BOOK OF THE LAST TWO CENTURIES' (Schwerdt). Tooley -- who describes it as 'a magnificent work, the most valuable English colour plate book on Sport' -- states that Howitt's finely-engraved plates were issued in 9 parts and then, on completion, in boards. The present copy contains the plates in an early state, printed on sheets bearing watermarks of 1804 to 1806 (Abbey records copies dated as late as 1819), and the caption on plate 2 is in the early, uncorrected state (the caption was later amended to 'RACING' on the plate, as the caption on plate 9 has been corrected here). This copy appears to have been bound shortly after publication, and incorporates the etched title-panel from an original upper wrapper in the upper board. Abbey Scenery 14; Mellon/Podeschi 86; Schwerdt II, p. 53; Tooley 273.
