4° (275 x 208mm). 2 plain engraved plates, one folding, and 7 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Medland after Bell and West including a portrait of the author, 3 folding printed tables. (Some browning and spotting, corner of one plate waterstained, folding plate with a short tear at fold.) Contemporary tree calf, uncut (expertly rebacked with original spine preserved).

FIRST EDITION, second issue with pp.215-20 suppressed and p.214 numbered as such. These deal with a controversy over the Manton Patent Breech between Manton and the Duke of Richmond and about which Thornhill was a little too outspoken. Abbey: Life, 393; Schwerdt II, pp.258-59. 'The main attraction of this work lies in its nicely coloured and interesting plates, illustrating the way in which our forefathers shot their game in the beginning of the 19th century ... The treatise itself deals with dogs, winged and ground game, and game laws'.
