THORNTON, Robert (1757-1823). A Sporting Tour through Various Parts of France, in the Year 1802. [London]: Albion Press, 1806.
4° (286 x 226mm). Additional engraved titles, portrait of the author and 52 plates, 46 aquatints, one engraving and the remainder etched, mostly by Merigot after Bryant, 9 double-page, one folding, 2 leaves of engraved music, 7 engraved vignettes, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 16 proof plates, for the most part pasted to the reverse of the plates, and 4 proof vignettes loosely pasted over the originals. (One plate in volume I inserted in volume II and vice versa, portrait and engraved title of volume I somewhat foxed, a little offsetting, occasional light spotting, 3 double-page plates with very short split at folds, caption of a few plates trimmed.) Gosden binding of polished half russia, small gilt sporting tools in panels of spine with the title in gilt between 4 sets of double raised bands, small tool of a hunting horn at corners of sides, marbled edges (hinges lightly rubbed, corners of volume II repaired). Provenance: THE AUTHOR (his bookplate in bistre in volume I and a note in his hand pasted on an endpaper 'Am yr well wisher in great haste to save post Thornton &c'); Thomas Gosden (bookplate, presumably Thornton's note is addressed to him).
THE THORNTON-GOSDEN COPY. FIRST EDITION of Thornton's hunting experiences in France during the Peace of Amiens at which time he was introduced to Napoleon and presented him with a pair of pistols. The work was translated into French in 1894. Abbey Travel, 84; Schwerdt II, pp.259-61; Tooley 488. (2)
