A rare Steiff 'hot water bottle' bear
with centre seam, golden curly mohair, black boot button eyes, pronounced clipped snout, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, elongated jointed shaped limbs, cream felt pads, hump, opening at front centre seam fastened by shoelace wound around brass hooks, original metal hot-water tin and button in ear --20in. (51cm.) tall, circa 1907 (moth damage to felt paw pads, slight matting to mohair)

Lot Essay

This novelty Teddy 'hot water bottle' was expected to be a great success, but surprisingly there was very little interest in the bear. It is now quite rare to find, for only 90 examples were made during the years of production, 1907-1914
