Here ancient mythology from Ovid's Metamorphoses or Loves of the Gods and the history of the huntress deity Diana is evoked by the Caledonian boar. The subject provided inspiration for the illustration of a 'sideboard-buffet' in a park in Gabriel Huquier's Livres de Buffets, 1735 (see M. Roland, Lajoue et l'Art Rocaille, Paris, 1984, fig. 375.). It also provided embellishment for the cresting of a magnificent pier glass, attributed to the carver and gilder Matthias Lock (d. 1765), which was formerly in the collection of the Dukes of Westminster (sold Christie's, London, 12 November 1998, lot 30). Related carvers' patterns for flower-festooned sideboards and pier tables, ornamented in the French 'picturesque' manner with scenes of the chase, were issued in Thomas Johnson's Collection of Designs, 1758 and One Hundred and Fifty New Designs, 1761.
