RUSSIAN, EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The Virgin and Child, both crowned, stand on clouds, in a green and orange mandorla adorned with gold stars and rays. They are flanked by angels, saints and crowds of people. The sun and the moon are depicted on the upper corners of the icon, whereas Lord Sabbaoth blesses the scene as he emerges from the clouds at the top of the composition. The vibrant colours are accentuated by the gold of the background.
