THE ANNUNCIATION AND HOSPITALITY OF ABRAHAM WITH SAINT NICHOLAS AND SELECTED SAINTS
RUSSIAN, CIRCA 1800
The panel is occupied by a selection of saints, with St. Nicholas given precedence as he is represented alone. The top register shows the Annunciation, followed by the Hospitality of Abraham. The iconography of the latter does not follow the traditional representations where the Three Angels are simply seated around the table. Instead, on this icon, Abraham addresses specifically one of the angels, as it is attested in the Book of Genesis (Chapter 18). This is a prefiguration of the Incarnate Word of God, who is becoming reality in the New Testament during the Annunciation. Therefore, the two episodes depicted on this icon were selected because of their typological relation. The unusual composition of the panel indicates, most probably, the patron's personal choices. The icon is painted with saturated colours, with white and golden highlights on the garments. The earth and skies on the background are painted realistically.
