The faceted form of this bottle identifies it as one of a series produced for the Court at the Palace workshops during the eighteenth century. Such bottles were frequently also distributed as gifts to officials and others by the Emperor, and the unusual functioning seal here, combining two of the popular literati functional objects of the Qing dynasty, was probably added by the original recipient or a subsequent owner. Shengquan is probably an assumed name, but does not appear to be recorded as having been adopted by any prominent literatus or artist.
