Ram Kinkar Baij joined the Kala Bhavan art school at Santiniketan in 1925. From the outset he was not interested in Far Eastern art, but in modern Western art and traditional Indian sculpture. Baij's watercolors, executed on the spot and with great speed, represent his immediate response to the environment. As opposed to his sculpture and oils, where he is preoccupied with human drama, in his watercolors nature dominates. He transforms the calligraphic line, that had provided artistic inspiration to many artists of the Bengal School, into an expressionistic arabesque, and uses it to suggest, rather than illustrate the beauty of nature.
