Of square section with rounded sides and flattened rim, raised on four stout feet cast with stylized scrolls, one side engraved with three characters, with a pair of upright handles formed by dragons with arched body, the base cast with an apochryphal Xuande reign mark

Lot Essay

The three characters engraved on the side of the censer read Jizhen tan. Together with the character tan, the word for altar, the engraved inscription possibly makes reference to the temple for which this censer was made.
