Further details
John Martin arrived in India in 1788, aged 19, as a soldier in the army of The Honourable East India Company. In 1811 he was imprisoned for debt in the Calcutta Great Jail; his wife Joanne died of a broken heart as a result, in 1826, owing to his long incarceration according to a contemporary account without "prospect of obtaining his release". See "The Makers of Indian Colonial Silver" by Wynyard Wilkinson, 1987. We are indebted to the author for the attribution of this mark.
