Lot Essay

This is Rembrandt's earliest rendition of the Presentation in etching, a subject to which he returned twice more (see Bartsch 49 and 50). Here Rembrandt has set the figures in an overwhelming architectural space, with the main figures huddled together in the centre. It shows how far he had come in only four years of etching, to be able to depict a such grand scene within the scope of a miniature print.
