Lot Essay

The field of this rug is drawn with a precision that indicates it is from the earliest phase of manufacture of Polonaise rugs at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The design of the border in the present rug is very similar to that found on a Polonaise rug that was formerly in the Aita Collection, sold in these Rooms, 18 October 2001, lot 229. Both rugs have intermittent use of deep crimson wefts.
