The body made from a two-part mould with globular body and flaring mouth on short foot, a handle linking the body and mouth, the body with a band of vertical moulded fluted panels containing ribs, a band of zigzag motifs around the shoulder, the mouth moulded on the exterior with a band of benedictory kufic inscription, handle re-joined, repaired breaks to mouth, otherwise intact

Inherited by the present owner from her father's collection formed circa 1970.

Lot Essay

The inscription reads: bi'l-yumn wa al-baraka wa al-dawla [wa al-] sa'ada (With Good-fortune and Blessing and Wealth and Happiness)

It is unusual that the handle has been fixed on the waw between the last two words instead on the larger panel filled with a trefoil that forms the join between the beginning and end of the inscription. That it goes directly over the waw does however indicate that the potter may have been literate.
