The inscription reads: bi'l-yumn wa al-baraka wa al-dawla [wa al-] sa'ada (With Good-fortune and Blessing and Wealth and Happiness)
It is unusual that the handle has been fixed on the waw between the last two words instead on the larger panel filled with a trefoil that forms the join between the beginning and end of the inscription. That it goes directly over the waw does however indicate that the potter may have been literate.
