Lot Essay

This dish appears to be of a unique form from the mediaeval period. And while it does have considerable restoration, there is enough remaining to be sure that the central division was part of the orignal concept. It is reminiscent of the so-called nowrouz dishes with seven compartments (see Jean Soustiel, Objets d'art de l'Islam, 2, Paris, 1974, no.4 and Islamic Pottery: 800-1400 AD, exhibition catalogue, London, 1969, no.141 for two lajvardina examples). The size is however considerably larger than any of the dishes with circular depressions.
