Lot Essay

Linke produced an example of this pedestal for the study of Egypt's King Fuad I at Ras al-Tin in Alexandria (see in situ photograph above). The refurbishing of this extraordinary palace (17,000 square metres) was a huge opportunity for Linke, who was commissioned to produce a large portion of the furniture. According to the ébéniste's own words, his work completed for Egypt was the highlight of his career (C. Payne, François Linke, 1855-1946, The Belle Epoque of French Furniture, Antique Collector's Club, Woodbridge, 2003, pp. 287-291).
