Lot Essay

This broad easy-chair for drawing-room or library is likely to have been amongst the furnishings commissioned in the mid-18th century by Blayney Townley-Balfour (d. 1788) and retained for the new mansion Townley Hall, which was built by his grandson in the 1790s. Blayney Townley-Balfour (d. 1788) was an avid collector of art, who confessed in his diary to furniture purchases in one particular year 'to my sorrow and shame I have spent £1,000' (C. Hussey, 'Treasures of Townley Hall, Ireland’, Country Life, 26 November 1948, p. 1104).
