Lot Essay

This elegant firegrate, with Grecian flowered and ribbon-fretted frieze, has urn-capped columnar pilasters that reflect the Etruscan or Roman-columbarium style promoted in the 1770s by the architect Robert Adam (d. 1792). Amongst the principal contemporary grate-makers was Thomas Blockley (d. 1789) of Birmingham, who provided grates for Adam-designed interiors at houses such as Croome Court, Worcestershire.
