Lot Essay

On the first of September 1870 the Battle of Sedan took place, which resulted in the decisive defeat of the French army in the Franco-German War and eventually the fall of the Second French Empire. It was fought at the French border fortress of Sedan on the Meuse River, between 120,000 French troops under Napoleon III and Marshal Mac-Mahon and more than 200,000 German troops under the command of King William I and General Helmuth von Moltke.
