The naval battle between the Dutch and the English fleet depicted in this lot is in all likelyhood the Battle of Leghorn that took place during the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652-4). Before this clash on the 14th of March 1653, the two navies had been skirmishing inconclusively in the Mediterranean for a year. The Dutch won the battle, both capturing and sinking several British vessels, but their commander, Admiral Jan van Galen, was mortally wounded. As a consequence the English had to abandon their commercial interest in the region.

The starting date of the First Anglo-Dutch War provides a circa date for this painting.

We are grateful to Mrs. Irene B. Jacobs of the Maritime Museum and to Dr. Jeroen Giltaij for their assistance with this lot.
