Lot Essay

This type of channelled decoration is characteristic of Gillows dining chairs of the early 1820's, for example on a set of dining chairs supplied to Howe Peter, 2nd Marquess of Sligo (d. 1845) for Westport House, Co. Mayo (sold in these Rooms, 26 September 1996, lot 149) and a slightly later set supplied to John, 1st Earl Brownlow (d. 1853) for Belton House, Lincolnshire, sold in Christie's house sale, 30 April - 2 May 1984, lot 113.
