Lot Essay
The lady's writing-table, with folding candle flaps, is designed to accompany the fashionable 'Grecian' fire-side sofas introduced around 1800, and is mosaiced with Grecian-black inlay. The plinth for its Pompeian pillars has a Grecian-scrolled 'claw' terminating in Bacchic lion-paws, as featured in Thomas Sheraton's 1804 pattern for a drawing-room 'loo' central table (The Cabinet-Maker, Upholsterer, and General Artist's Encyclopaedia, 1804-8, pl.40). A related satinwood sofa-table, with cut-cornered top and with pearl-centred and lozenged inlay, was sold Sotheby's, London, 1 May 1987, lot 128.
