Opaline is a translucent milky glass which can be coloured with the addition of various metallic oxides. Its manufacture began in about 1810 and with the Bohemian influence had become richer in colour and angular in shape by 1830, enhanced with gilt, silver and enamel decoration. The majority was made in France and Bohemia as experimentation and manufacture of coloured glass had been hindered in Britain with the glass excise.
