Lot Essay

The present view is most likely to be the rocks at Kilkee on the coast of Co. Clare. Hone first visited Co. Clare circa 1890 and continued to visit for many years. The wild coastline appealed to him and the rocks at Kilkee became one of his favourite motifs. The rugged black cliffs, stacked in horizontal layers like shelves were almost architectural and the juxtaposition with the crashing, foaming waves provided a constantly changing image for the artist.

The three seagulls, depicted masterfully with strokes of white paint, seem small and fragile against the relentless pounding of the sea.
