Lot Essay

Probably painted in the 1890s the present work is most likely the coast of Co. Clare, a favoured haunt of the artist.

It is interesting to note that it is just such an image of the coast of Co. Clare Rocks at Kilkee (private collection) that was chosen by Anne Crookshank and the Knight of Glin to illustrate the dust jacket of Ireland's Painters 1600-1940, Yale, 2002, illustrated p. 252 and cover.
