J.T. HENDERSON
Natal Cricketers' Annual [after 1889 South African Cricketers' Annual]
Pietermaritzburg, Durban and Capetown: various publishers, 1885-1892, 1906-07. 10 vols., 8vo., mounted photographs of the South African XI, 1889, and the Natal Team, 1890, in respective volumes, 1891 with illustrations, plates in 1906-07, some leaves printed on coloured paper (occasional spotting), uniform blue half cloth and marbled boards, preserving original limp cloth covers, cover of 1905/06 incorrectly printed "Season 1906-07" (some covers soiled). Provenance: Frank Hill, Kroonstad (stamp and signatures in 1887) -- Alfred D. Taylor (booklabel in 1885, 1887 and 1906, ownership signature in 1891, 1892 and 1907) -- J.W. Goldman (bookplate in all vols.) -- R.N. Jones (signature on front free endpapers).
A COMPLETE RUN OF THIS UNIQUE SOUTH AFRICAN ANNUAL. The only other annual to be published in South Africa before World War II was the South African Cricketing Guide, 1871-72. A news clipping tipped into the first vol. states: "Since the South African war these books have become exceedingly scarce. A complete set should realise four guineas", while Goldman has written: "These are very rare as stock was destroyed by fire". William Milton, rather than Henderson, edited the volume for the 1890-91 season, published in 1891. RARE. Allen 69; Padwick 3611 & 3615. (10)
