A NORTH GERMAN BASKET-HILTED MILITARY SWORD (TESSAK)
Late 16th/early 17th Century
With Spanish blade of flattened hexagonal section boldly stamped 'Fransisco Ruys' on one side at the forte and 'En Toledo' on the other, iron hilt of rounded bars, including a pair of long quillons with vertically recurved tips formed as globular mouldings cut with a pattern of raised dots, basket-guard incorporating a ring-guard and thumb-ring at the inner-face, compressed domed pommel en suite with the quillon tips, and an early grip of leather bound over cord (the hilt pitted).
