A GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE
circa 1660
With octagonal sighted barrel cut with eight grooves and struck with the barrelsmith's mark on the breech, all in a shield, a man,'CVM'above (Neue Støckel 2335), flat lock engraved with scrolls, boldly cut with a leaping stag vignette, signed 'J.R. Botzen' in a cartouche at the rear and all on a pounced matted ground, fitted with sliding pan-cover with button release and flat wheel-cover with brass facing-plate, the latter decorated en suite with the lock and involving a pierced stag trophy, figured fruitwood full stock, fluted fore-end (chipped about a barrel pin), the butt sparsely inlaid with engraved horn plaques, the cheek-piece decorated with a grazing stag above a plaque incorporating the monogram 'DS', with sliding patch-box cover veneered in engraved horn, contrasting horn butt-plate, iron trigger-guard, engraved horn ramrod-pipe and fore-end cap, set trigger, and horn-tipped ramrod.
