A POLISH HUSSAR'S LONG ESTOC
Early 18th Century
With long slender German export blade of hollow-triangular section etched at the forte with scrolling foliage, a series of celestial motifs including a lunar profile mask, a Bishop's head, and inscribed 'PM a Solingen', iron hilt of characteristic form, comprising tapering quillons, a pair of long slender langets on both sides, engraved flat drop-shaped pommel, and the grip retaining a portion of its original leather covering over cord.

The Bishop's head device and the initials PM are styled after those of the well-known 17th Century bladesmith Peter Münch of Solingen. The present blade almost certainly post-dates his working life and it would therefore appear likely that the devices and inscription were intended to enhance marketability in the early 18th Century.

Three Polish swords of this type are recorded with blades etched in a very similar manner to the present example (Musée de l'Armee, Paris, J 292 and 293; the Army Museum, Vienna). See Albert Weyersberg, Solinger Schwertschmiede, 1926, p. 34, fig. 83, plate XXVIII
