A RARE PAIR OF FRENCH WHEEL-LOCK OFFICER'S HOLSTER PISTOLS
circa 1650-60
With slender barrels formed in two stages with turned girdle, plain flat locks with bevelled edges, struck with the initials 'PH' on the inside, struck with a mark behind the pans (each mark incomplete), engraved small hemispherical backets for the wheels, sliding pan-covers, pale walnut full stocks carved with simple raised mouldings at the rear, each with an unusually exaggerated projection beneath the locks cut with a nodular moulding studded with small domed nails in the German fashion, fluted fore-ends, flattened spurred iron pommels engraved with a flowering scroll on both sides, long iron trigger-plates tapering to a long narrow point, the remaining mounts all of plain iron, and original contrasting wooden ramrods with iron tips (one side-nail, another screw and one ramrod-pipe all replaced, one fore-end repaired at the muzzle).
