A FINE TUSCO-EMILIAN SNAPHAUNCE BELT PISTOL
Early 18th Century
With Brescian barrel formed in two stages with raised mouldings at the breech and muzzle and stamped by the barrelsmith 'Vicenzo Cominazzo' punctuated by stamped rayed circles (di Carpegna, Com.No. 136), rounded chiselled lock decorated with human masks in relief and engraved with flowering scrolls issuant from a monster, highly figured curly walnut full stock carved with a demon mask in relief behind the ramrod-pipe (fore-end cracked towards the muzzle), inset with flat iron plaques behind the barrel tang and the ramrod-pipe, another impaled by the trigger, each finely pierced and engraved with interlaced patterns of scrolling flowers variously inhabited by masks and a serpent attacked by a bird-of-prey, the side-plate en suite and also involving a hare pursued by hounds, spurred iron pommel engraved with large scrolling flowers and centering on a rosette, moulded iron ramrod-pipes and fore-end cap, belt hook, and original wooden ramrod with iron baluster tip.
