Lot Essay

The picture shows Isola San Giulio, an Island on Lake Orta, in the Alpine foothills of northern Italy which has inspired poets and writers from Robert Browning to Friedrich Nietzsche. St Julius, who arrived at Lake Orta over 1,600 years ago, founded the basilica, whose campanile Flint has depicted in the present watercolour.
