Lot Essay

The pair to the present box, with identical marks and also destined for exportation, was sold Sotheby's, Geneva, 16 May 1991, lot 113. The practice of exporting gold boxes, watches and objects of vertu in pairs to the Oriental market, mainly China, was particularly popular in Geneva and England in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
