The box, circa 1880, with pseudo-French marks, later struck with two French post-1893 gold import marks, the étui Paris 1784/85, maker's mark rubbed, with the second discharge mark of Henry Clavel 1783-1789
Circular agate box, the cover and sides applied with a pierced and stamped gold cagework chased and engraved with a ribbon, flowers, trailing foliage, birds, insects, and musical trophies, the cover centred with a circular enamel miniature of a lady in a gold dress with a bow at her corsage and a white underdress, wearing a coral necklace and a grey cap with lace, within a rose-cut diamond border, the matted gold borders engraved with flutes alternating with pellets, the rim engraved with swags; the étui, slightly tapering rectangular brown lacquered tin case with rounded sides, slightly arched top and flat base, the obverse and reverse of cover set with miniatures under glass of a woodland scene with a young lady and a gentleman, he playing a clarinet, each within a chased gold border adorned with foliage, the obverse and reverse of cover applied with pierced gold inscription SOUVENIR/D'AMITIE, the hinged gold mounts chased with a laurel band, bordered with running gold lozenges, containing five-leaved tablets
