Lot Essay

A similar ru-type glazed vase was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 29 October 2001, lot 576; while a larger ru-type vase (53.4 cm.) was sold in these Rooms, 2 November 1999, lot 622. Compare also the larger Qianlong-marked vase of this shape and design but covered with a teadust glaze, illustrated in Monochrome Porcelain, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1999, pl. 247.

The form of this vase is derived from the archaic bronze hu. An example with a design of bands closely related to the decoration on the present porcelain example is illustrated by W. Watson, Ancient Chinese Bronzes, London, 1962, pl. 64b, while another with bands and animal loop handles is illustrated pl. 50b.
