The two-story building with ground-story shop hung with various carcasses and cuts of meat and with butcher, the upper story with a decorated room, with removable backboard, together with a later plexiglass panel to allow viewing from the back

Lot Essay

Three-dimensional model butchers' shops such as this example are rare. They are more commonly depicted in high relief set in a glass-fronted shadow box. A shadow box example from the Collection of Bertram K. Little and Nina Fletcher Little was sold Sotheby's New York, 29 January 1994, lot 94. Another from the Judkyn/Pratt Collection was sold Christie's South Kensington, 8 November 1995, lot 52. A further example gifted to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London by H.R.H. Queen Mary, is illustrated in F.G. Roe, 'Christmas in Lilliput', The Magazine Antiques, December 1940, p. 277, fig.41. These may have once met some educational role, designed to be studied rather than played with as toys, as the cuts of meat and types of carcasses are rendered with some accuracy.
