Lot Essay

Another example of this model with a fox prowling below the dovecote remains in the Wrightsman Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. A third example in the Bowles Collection, San Francisco Museums of Fine Art, Palace of the Legion of Honor, dated circa 1755-56, also retains its original covers. The central tower cover is moulded and painted in imitation of thatch. Those on the perimeter turrets are pale grey, possibly in imitation of slate. Cf. Simon Spero, The Bowles Collection of 18th-Century English and French Porcelain, San Francisco, 1995, cat. no. 42

Plaster replacement covers for the present example have been made from moulds taken directly from this third dovecote and will be offered with this lot.
