EXTREMELY RARE CASES OF LA ROMANEE 1953 AND 1962
Lying in Twickenham, Middlesex (EHD)
Lot 464 is offered duty-paid, but available in bond
La Romanée Grand Cru--Vintage 1953
Côte de Nuits. French-bottled: Leroy
Excellent appearance. Recent released from the Domaine. U.S. slip labels
In Christie's carton
This case was purchased directly from the cellars of LEROY in 2004 where it had lain undisturbed since the wine was produced. LEROY produced the wines of La Romanée from 1950-1961 during which time the reputation of the vineyard, which lies adjacent to La Romanée Conti, was considerably enhanced. 1953 was a great vintage both for Burgundy in general and for LA ROMANÉE in particular
Tasting note: " 1953 Liger-Belair La Romanée: (Maison Leroy bottling with Tastevinage label - ullage of approximately 1 1/2 cm). Unlike the corked bottle in February, this was a fabulous wine. Initially, the nose was rather high-toned but still fresh but with air, it deepened to reveal gorgeous spice notes cut with lovely earth and game nuances. The wonderfully rich flavors are sweet, delicious and amazingly complex with a sappy, mouth coating, remarkably long and intense finish. There is real class here with a certain reserve yet this is quite a generous wine by the typical standards of La Romanée. There is plenty of life left and while this is drinking as well as it ever will, it should continue to hold if well stored. " 95/now Burghound
