The magnificent schooner Sylvana was designed and built by Camper & Nicholsons at Gosport for Colonel Courtenay Morgan of Tredegar Park, Newport, in 1910. Registered at 138 tons gross (94½ net and 254 Thames), she measured 110½ feet in length with a 23½ foot beam and had auxiliary power in the form of a 4-cylinder paraffin motor for cruising. Sold to Comte Jean de Polignac just before the Great War, she was then resold to the French journal Le Matin in 1920 at which time she was renamed Pays-de-France and removed to Marseilles.
