The three-masted steel barque Boieldieu was built at Nantes in 1902 for the Compagnie de Navigation Français although she was transferred into new ownership early in 1904. Registered at 2,208 tons gross (1,434 net), she measured 277½ feet in length with a 40½ foot beam and had a somewhat chequered career beginning in June 1904 when she left Sydney bound for Falmouth with a cargo of Australian wheat. Soon beset by heavy weather and damaged in several successive storms, she drifted for seven weeks until eventually sighting the New Zealand coast whereupon she was picked up by a tug and towed into Lyttelton. Repaired after many delays, she left for Falmouth in December and finally discharged her cargo an extraordinary ten months after loading it. The following year she caught fire at Oakland, California, badly damaging her poop and was twice stranded in the Gulf of Mexico during the same voyage in 1919. Laid up in 1921, she was broken up at L'Orient in 1927.
