Lot Essay

This wine trolley is a copy of the celebrated pair in the Wellington Collection at Asprey House, London. The original pair was made by the famous Birmingham manufacturer Sir Edward Thomason for George IV to better circulate the wine bottles to his guests at the dinner table. In his Memoirs Thomason mentions that "On their arrival, his Majesty expressed his entire approbation of the thought. Sometime afterwards, the King presented them to the Duke of Wellington."
