Lot Essay

Related to the figure on the Virgin of the left of Fra Semplice's Saint Felice da Cantalice receiving Christ from the Madonna in the Arco di Bagno in Mantua, illustrated in R. Pallucchini, La pittura veneziana del Seicento, Milan, 1981, no. 365. The picture is signed and dated 1640 and was probably commissioned by King Charles I.
Fra Semplice painted another version of the subject in 1641 for the Church of Capucin in Mestre.
