[GREEK ANTHOLOGY]. Florilegium diversorum epigrammatum in septem libros. Venice: Aldus, January 1521.

8° (158 x 92mm). Greek text. Woodcut Aldine device on title and verso of final leaf. (Perforation stamp and other library markings on title and title verso, some marginal waterstaining.) Earlier 19th-century red morocco, gilt-panelled sides, floral gilt spine compartments, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed and bumped, library label pasted onto one compartment). Provenance: Springfield, Mass., City Library (bookplate and markings as above).

Second Aldine edition of the earliest known anthology in Greek. The work was compiled by Meleager of Gadara, whose title 'Anthologia', the Greek word for flowers, reflected the conceit that the poems formed a garland for the head. Aldus used his own annotated copy of Janus Lascaris's 1494 editio princeps as an exemplar for the first edition of 1503. This later edition was re-edited by Franciscus Asulanus. Adams A-1183; Renouard 93.17.
